South County Outreach: Empty Bowls Gala

The Empty Bowls Gala is more than a fundraising event. It is a powerful reminder that a simple meal can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. Designed in support of South County Outreach, this annual gathering brought together community members, local businesses, and philanthropists for an evening dedicated to raising awareness and fighting food insecurity throughout Orange County. Every design decision reflected the organization’s mission while creating a welcoming and memorable guest experience.
Designing Within an Iconic Venue
Hosted within the iconic Segerstrom Shelby Event Center, the event embraced the venue’s distinctive architecture and remarkable collection of vintage automobiles, allowing the space itself to become part of the design story. Rows of restored vintage fuel pumps, glowing neon signage, and classic cars framed the room, while floor-to-ceiling windows filled the space with natural light throughout the evening program.
Rather than competing with the venue’s industrial-modern aesthetic, the décor complemented the surroundings through a fresh palette of crisp whites, vibrant greens, citrus-inspired accents, and natural textures. The result was an environment that felt bright, contemporary, and effortlessly inviting.
Tablescapes and Floral Design
Throughout the ballroom, custom tablescapes celebrated the connection between fresh food, community, and generosity. Handcrafted ceramic bowls in varied artisan glazes anchored each place setting, paired with elevated centerpieces that layered white calla lilies and garden roses with fresh rosemary, sage, and mint. Clear glass vessels lined with fresh carrots rested atop moss-covered risers, while bright citrus, seasonal produce, and natural greenery filled out the surrounding arrangements. Each composition created a visual moment that was both beautiful and meaningful.
Navy and white geometric patterned linens paired with clear ghost chairs introduced a modern sophistication, while crisp lime green napkins added a fresh pop of color that echoed the greenery throughout the room. The restrained palette allowed the colorful, produce-driven centerpieces to remain the focal point of every table.
Cocktail and Reception Areas
Beyond the main dining room, cocktail spaces were styled with charcoal linen high-top tables and clear ghost seating that maintained the clean, contemporary design language. The reception areas integrated seamlessly with the venue’s existing displays, while branded signage and outdoor arrival elements welcomed guests and reinforced the organization’s presence throughout the experience. Projection screens carried the Empty Bowls and South County Outreach branding across the room, keeping the mission visible from every seat.
Design With Purpose
The design balanced elegance with authenticity, demonstrating that impactful event décor does not need to be extravagant to leave a lasting impression. Every detail served a purpose, reinforcing the event’s mission while creating an atmosphere where guests could gather, connect, and give back. The thoughtful use of organic materials, fresh produce, and clean contemporary styling transformed the space into an experience that felt both elevated and deeply connected to the cause it supported.
